## Overview

Hightouch provides an intuitive Command Line Interface (CLI) to give users access to resources in the terminal or automation scripts.
You can use the CLI to access the definition of your resources like syncs and models or trigger a sync run from your terminal or automation scripts.

> [!NOTE]
>
> This page covers the Hightouch CLI (`ht`). To generate typed wrappers from
> event contracts, see the [Events CLI](https://docs.hightouch.com/events/contracts/cli.md) (`htevents`).

## Quick start

### Install CLI

To install from shell scripts, run:

```shell theme={null}
# Install the latest version
$ curl -sLf https://getcli.hightouch.io | sh -
# Install specific version
$ curl -sLf https://getcli.hightouch.io | INSTALL_HT_VERSION=v0.1.0 sh -
```

### Login with API key

Next, you need to create a Hightouch API key in your Hightouch workspace settings.

1. From the [**API keys** tab](https://app.hightouch.com/settings/api-keys?from=docs) on the **Settings** page, click **Add API key**.
2. Enter a descriptive **Name** for your key.
3. Under **User group**, select the group whose permissions the key should have in this workspace, or select **All of the creator's groups** to give the key the same permissions as you.
4. Copy your **API key** and store it in a safe location. The key is only displayed once.
5. Click **Create API key**.

Then you can login with this API key:

```shell theme={null}
$ ht login
Hightouch API key [************************************]:
```

You can also use your API key with ENV variables.

```shell theme={null}
HIGHTOUCH_APIKEY=${yourkey} ht COMMANDS
```

## CLI reference

Once you've installed and logged in, you can follow the [CLI Reference documentation](https://docs.hightouch.com/developer-tools/cli-reference.md) to start using the CLI.
