# Docs MCP server

> Connect AI tools to the Hightouch docs with an MCP server, or load the docs as plain-text files.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The docs MCP server only searches and reads Hightouch documentation. It
> doesn't connect to your Hightouch workspace or take actions
> in your account. To build audiences, design journeys, and generate emails, ad
> creatives, and campaign concepts in your workspace from an AI assistant, use
> the [Hightouch MCP](https://docs.hightouch.com/ai-integrations/mcp.md) instead.

## Overview

Hightouch publishes documentation in formats that AI tools can read directly, so they have accurate and current information when answering questions or helping you build integrations. Choose the format that fits how your tool works:

| Format | Best for | How it works |
| :- | :- | :- |
| [MCP server](#mcp-server) | Targeted lookups from tools that support MCP | The tool searches for relevant sections and reads only the pages it needs. Uses fewer tokens because it doesn't load everything upfront. |
| [Plain-text files](#plain-text-files) | Broad context loading or tools without MCP support | Paste a URL to give your tool an index of all pages or the full content of every page in one file. |

## MCP server

For AI tools that support [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io) (MCP), Hightouch publishes a docs MCP server. Your AI tool searches the docs and reads only the pages it needs to answer your question, instead of loading all of the documentation at once. That means faster answers and lower token usage.

The server's content updates on every docs deployment, so answers reflect the latest docs.

### Choose an endpoint

| Endpoint | URL | What it can read |
| :- | :- | :- |
| Public | `https://docs.hightouch.com/mcp` | All public docs. No sign-in required. |
| Signed in | `https://docs.hightouch.com/authed/mcp` | Public docs, plus the private docs your Hightouch account can view. Your AI tool asks you to sign in to Hightouch when you connect. |

Most people should use the public endpoint. Use the signed-in endpoint if you work with features whose docs require you to sign in, so your AI tool can read those pages too.

### Available tools

The server gives your AI tool three tools. Tool names can vary by client, so your tool may show slightly different labels.

| Tool | What it does |
| :- | :- |
| Search | Searches the docs and returns matching sections with titles, links, and snippets. |
| Read pages | Reads the full content of one or more docs pages. |
| Submit feedback | Reports a docs page that's wrong, outdated, or confusing. The Hightouch docs team reviews these reports. |

### Connect your AI tool

The steps below use the public endpoint. To use the signed-in endpoint, replace the URL with `https://docs.hightouch.com/authed/mcp`.

#### Claude

**If you're an Owner on a Team or Enterprise plan:**

1. Go to [**Organization settings > Connectors**](https://claude.ai/admin-settings/connectors).
2. Click **Add**.
3. Hover over **Custom**, then select **Web**.
4. Enter the URL: `https://docs.hightouch.com/mcp`.
5. Click **Add**.

**If you're a member on a Team or Enterprise plan:**

1. Ask an Owner to add the connector first. Members can't add custom connectors.
2. Go to [**Customize > Connectors**](https://claude.ai/customize/connectors).
3. Find the Hightouch docs connector, labeled **Custom**.
4. Click **Connect**.

**If you're on a Pro, Max, or Free plan:**

1. Go to [**Customize > Connectors**](https://claude.ai/customize/connectors).
2. Click **+**, then click **Add custom connector**.
3. Enter the URL: `https://docs.hightouch.com/mcp`.
4. Click **Add**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Free plan accounts can have one custom connector. If you already have one,
> remove it before you add this one.

#### Claude Code

Run this from your terminal:

```bash theme={null}
claude mcp add --transport http hightouch-docs https://docs.hightouch.com/mcp
```

Run `claude mcp list` to confirm that `hightouch-docs` shows as connected.

#### Cursor

Add this to `.cursor/mcp.json` in your project:

```json theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hightouch-docs": {
      "url": "https://docs.hightouch.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

#### VS Code

Add this to `.vscode/mcp.json` in your project:

```json theme={null}
{
  "servers": {
    "hightouch-docs": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://docs.hightouch.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

#### Other clients

Use `https://docs.hightouch.com/mcp` with Streamable HTTP transport. See your client's documentation for how to add an MCP server.

You can also copy the server URL from any docs page: open the page menu next to the page title and select **Copy MCP server URL**.

### Example prompts

Once you connect, your AI tool searches the docs when you ask about Hightouch. Try prompts like these:

**Sync configuration**

```text theme={null}
How do I set up a sync to Salesforce? What sync modes does it support?
```

```text theme={null}
What's the difference between upsert and mirror sync modes?
```

**Destinations and sources**

```text theme={null}
What permissions do I need to connect a Snowflake source?
```

```text theme={null}
Show me the field mapping options for the Braze destination.
```

**Troubleshooting**

```text theme={null}
I'm getting a "rate limit exceeded" error syncing to HubSpot. What should I check?
```

```text theme={null}
How do I use the Live Debugger to inspect API requests for a sync?
```

**Customer Studio**

```text theme={null}
How do I create a computed trait that counts purchases in the last 30 days?
```

```text theme={null}
What filter types are available in the audience builder?
```

> [!NOTE]
>
> To look up the docs and act in your workspace in the same conversation, add
> both this server and the [Hightouch MCP](https://docs.hightouch.com/ai-integrations/mcp.md).

### Usage limits

Each user can make up to 5,000 requests per hour. If your tool hits the limit, it gets a `429 Too Many Requests` error. The limit resets on a rolling hourly window.

## Plain-text files

Hightouch publishes plain-text versions of the docs that any AI tool can read without parsing web page markup. Both files are regenerated on every deployment, so they always reflect the latest content. Use these when your tool doesn't support MCP or when you want to load broad context in a single request.

[**llms.txt**](https://docs.hightouch.com/llms.txt) is an index of every public page, organized by product area. Use this when you want an AI tool to know what documentation is available.

[**llms-full.txt**](https://docs.hightouch.com/llms-full.txt) contains the full text of every public page in a single file. Use this when you want an AI tool to have complete context about Hightouch.

To use either file, paste the URL into your AI tool:

```text theme={null}
https://docs.hightouch.com/llms.txt
https://docs.hightouch.com/llms-full.txt
```
